Grok Imagine / FIELD NOTES
Make a short GIF from a Grok Imagine video
The GIF option makes a silent animation from the beginning of an accessible Grok Imagine video. It uses up to the first 15 seconds, 12 frames per second, and a width of 480 pixels, with height following the source proportions.
Choose it when your destination specifically needs a GIF or a short repeating visual. For the complete clip, its original frame detail, or its audio, keep the MP4 source instead. Conversion is only available when the original video allows guest access.
Download your own work or content you have permission to save.
Know what the GIF will include
If the source is shorter than 15 seconds, the conversion uses the available beginning of that clip. It does not invent more motion or extend a scene. Because the selection starts at the beginning, watch the preview first: an opening pause or unwanted first moment will be part of the GIF.
| Property | Current behavior | Practical effect |
|---|---|---|
| Segment | First 15 seconds at most | Later moments are not included |
| Frame rate | 12 frames per second | Fast motion can look less smooth than the video |
| Width | 480 pixels | The source proportions determine the height |
| Sound | None | Keep MP4 or extract available audio separately |
| Controls | Fixed conversion settings | No start-time, crop, frame-rate, or size selector |
Prepare one animation at a time
Only one conversion runs at a time. A busy message means you should wait before submitting another conversion. The temporary result and converted download expire after 10 minutes, so save promptly. If the session expires, check the original post again and prepare a fresh result.
- Paste the supported individual Imagine post link and wait for the accessible video result.
- Play the beginning of the preview and check that it contains the moment you want.
- Choose GIF and keep the page open while the file is fetched and converted.
- Once the download is requested, check your browser’s downloads. Open the saved GIF to review its motion before sharing it.
Expect a different look from the MP4
GIF uses a limited colour palette and the fixed settings described above. Gradients, tiny text, fine textures, and rapid camera movements can look different from the video source. A larger GIF file is not evidence of better picture quality; the format can be less efficient than a compressed video.
Check the animation in the app where you plan to use it. Some services resize or convert uploaded GIFs again, and their display behavior can differ from a local viewer. Retain the MP4 if you want a better starting point for a later edit or a destination that accepts ordinary video.
Resolve the source before troubleshooting conversion
GIF cannot be created from a private post, a conversation URL, or a video Grok refuses to serve to guests. If source access is restricted, use Grok’s own available export controls. There is no local file upload here, so a video already saved on your device needs a separate editor for further custom conversion.
The source must be within 200 MB, and conversion processing is limited to 10 minutes of media even though the GIF itself includes only the opening 15 seconds. This is not a workaround for oversized sources. The converter also retains visible source watermarks rather than removing them.
Questions about this guide
Can I choose a segment from the middle?
No. GIF conversion starts at the beginning and uses up to 15 seconds. Save the source and use a separate editor when you need a different segment.
Why does my GIF have no audio?
GIF does not carry an audio track. Use the MP4 source for the video with any existing sound.
Can I make a GIF from a still Imagine image here?
No. The GIF choice is offered for video sources, not as an animation tool for still images.
Can batch mode create ten GIFs together?
Batch mode checks sources and can package them as a ZIP. GIF conversions are prepared from individual video results, one conversion at a time.
